How do I create different melodies in one bar? Like two half notes and a whole note playing at the same time? When I attempt to do this, the whole note erases the two half notes...

See the multiple color 1, 2, 3, 4 in the note selection bar? Those are for the voices. You usually are writing in voice 1 (blue). You can select 2 (green) and write a second voice, then 3 (beige) and write another line, up to 4 voices. See the handbook on Voices.
OH, nevermind, that was quite silly of me.....All I had to do was press the 2 button and it created a seperate melody :S
