I mean the long curved line the sits above every sung musical phrase.

Thank you ! This works fine until i get to the end of the stave and then the line carrys across the page instead of going to the stave below. is there something I'm not doing?

Click on the starting note;
Hold down Ctrl and click on the final note;
Press S.
It works too: Highlight the measures and press S

I expect you are dragging the line with the mouse. This is not the supported way. Rather, use shift and the L/R direction arrows on your keyboard.
