It's just there for show on screen; it won't print. The purpose is to help you see the duration of the symbol.

Thanks for your response.
I use the program in class (I'm a theory teacher), so I'm unconcerned with the printout. I use MuseScore to do 'live demos' of examples in class. This line is not helpful to me in any case, and it just confuses the issue for students. Hence, I was hoping I could turn it off, or make it invisible, or some such.

Probably it should disappear when you turn off View / Show Unprintable. I'd call that a bug. Feel free to submit it official via Help / Report a Bug (from within MuseScore).
