changing fret / string choice in when tablature and standard notation linked

Hi,

Was using linked tablature to create scales for guitar so students can see both traditional music and tab notation. Issue is I often want to modify string / fret choices made when MuseScore automatically fills in the tab values (I like to enter data in note mode). I can't find a way, when staff and tab are linked, to edit the tab values (to, for instance, reflect a specific fingering for a scale). Am I missing something obvious, or would I have to create the tab and the note staves separately (i.e. linking isn't an option)?
