What is the correct way to enter an ottava? The ottava I added only works for the first measure.

If you click and drag, the end point is moved for printing purposes only. Click and drag should only be to make small cosmetic adjustments.
Double click on the ottava to select it for moving the end points. Hold down the shift key, and a dotted line appears from the end of the ottava to the point in the score where it ends. Use the left and right arrow keys to move that end point. Click on the other end box and repeat the shift and arrow operation if you also need to move that end. Finally, click and drag to tweak the appearance of the end points.

hello,
I removed your 8va lines.
Then I dragged a new 8va line from the palette to the first note of the melody.
Then I doubleclicked the line.
Then I just used the keyboard to extend that line (Shift+Right arrow) until I reached the last note of the 8va opassage. Notice, how the line flows over into the next system nicely.
