My staff goes the whole page width, help

I think it happens while using line breaks. suddenly I have one bar of say only four crotchet notes (as simple as could be), and yet the bar goes a whole page width.

What am I doing wrong please and how can I get it back to a sensible format, eg four bars per page width.
