"N" for note notation quit and so did keyboard functions
Musescore 1.0-I can no longer use the keyboard for notation. The letters on the keyboard toggle the note values, and functions like stretching measures also don't work. I did a factory reset-but no difference. Any suggestions?

I am a new user and have just downloaded MuseScore 1.0 The simple instructions on the web site,PART 4 Video "Note Entry via Midi Keyboard and Playback", are not working for me. The MuseScore program runs well when I notate via the laptop keyboard or mouse, but I cant get the Midi keyboard and the laptop to talk. I am running Vista on the lappy, and using a Carillon M1X1 USB Midi Interface cable (Midi I/O to USB, no driver required). I think my problem might be in the drop down menu - Edit - Preferences- I/O - Choose PortMidi input interface, but the thing is, there is nothing in that box for me to choose, even though I have the keyboard plugged in and switched on, and the Midi socket symbol "Enable midi input", is highlighted on my working page. Is there something I am not seeing??

Did you restart MuseScore after you plugged your MIDI keyboard?

My mistake for not being clear. I meant the computer keyboard. There is no MIDI keyboard hooked up. Also, after I wrote this, I uninstalled Musescore and then re-installed it. No change.

Someone else posted about an apparently unrelated problem involving MIDI; I think that's who lasconic was responding to.
You mention doing a factory reset - do you mean the reset button under preferences, or "mscore -F"? You might try the latter if you haven't already.
But it might also be interesting to go to edit->preferences->shortcuts and see if it seems those shortcuts are defined correctly. Also try opening the ".ini" file directly - I forget which is which, but you should find several different files under your AppData folder in Windows. Presumably something comparable on other systems. On Windows, some are under Local, some under Roaming, so you may have to poke around.

I did the -F reset. And I checked the preferences. What is odd is that the first time I hit the letter N, it indicates I am in note entry mode. If I hit esc twice to get out of it, the next time I try to get in by using the letter N, it won't work. As far as selecting notes, the letters on the computer keyboard never work. So, i am in the midst of writing a 4 voice (SATB) choral arrangement, and I have to do everything manually. And it is also annoying not to be able to stretch a bar if I want to.
On an unrelated issue that just started this morning, sometimes the entire screen goes white while I am working. My only solution is to close Musescore and reopen it. I find myself saving my work VERY often, because I don't have a lot of faith that it won't disappear permanently in the middle of what I am doing.

Most odd. I suppose you couldn't make it any worse by installing the 1.1 prerelease, and maybe that will even fix it.

I looked at the prerelease warnings-it talks about bugs and possibility of losing files. I'm pretty far into the current arrangement I am working on.
So, basically, I am nervous about losing it. My thoughts were to keep the 1.0, but also download the 1.1. My scores are saved in 'My Documents', so I assume that even if 1.1 crashed, I would be OK as far as not losing the score.
Is my thinking correct on this?

Some prereleases are more stable than others, so the warnings you are seeing are probably for a worst case scenario - like the very first prelease for a brand new major version. I'd expect that to be iffy. But this particular version - 1.1 - is actually not very different from 1.0 , and most of the changes are bug *fixes*, not new features that would be likely to introduce new bugs. Which is to say, it should actually be more, not less, stable than 1.0.
As for protecting yourself against crashes, the best way to do that would be to make a copy of your My Documents folder, or just the files you will be working. Then do your 1.1 work on those copies, so if something does go wrong, you still have the originals.
But I'd go ahead and install 1.1 right on top of 1.0 rather than trying to have both installed (unless others think this a bad idea for some reason that I am not considering). It seems more likely you'd into problems from the duplication than from anything that might actually have broken in 1.1. And you can always uninstall 1.1 and reinstall 1.0 if things don't work out - takes only a minute or so to uninstall one version and install another. None of this will mess with your documents, nor any program settings you may have made since your last reset.
No guarantees it will fix things for you, of course, but as I said, sounds like it can't get worse at this point, as long as you save copies of your files. And I can't think of anything else to try.

I downloaded 1.1, and so far, it solved the problem of the N for note entry not working. Keep your fingers crossed!
