length of line
I consulted the online manual and tried to move the
right end of the line by one measure right but couldn't.
I selected the line OK but nothing else I did had any effect.
The manual might be messed up because it says right and left same.

You don't say which type line, but for most lines the Handbook specifically says to *double click* the line, then use Shift plus the left or right arrow keys.

it says use the shift + minus sign for both directions but I'll try the arrow keys

Actually, those icon images in the Handbook ARE supposed to be 'arrow keys', not minus signs, but the arrowheads are tiny and they do look a bit like minus signs with a smudge on the end of them....
Marc is right about the general procedure. Here's a bit more detail:
When you double click on the line, it will enter 'edit mode' and you will see three 'handles' (small squares) set in it: Left, center, and right. The initial phase of edit mode highlights the right handle by colouring it blue. When this handle is active, you can extend the line--using the arrow keys (with or without Shift)--to move the end of it left or right. Arrow key alone moves the line end in very small increments; arrow key + Shift moves it one note at a time; arrow key + Shift + Control moves it one whole measure at a time.
Should you wish to move the line up or down, first single-click on the middle handle (it will turn blue) and then use the arrow keys as needed.
If you need to adjust the left end of the line, single-click on the left handle and then use the arrow keys.
Note that you can click and drag any of the handles, but doing so will NOT preserve the relative-to-anchor-point information in its placement. The result will be that if/when the score is reformatted, the line may run off the edge of the page instead of breaking at the appropriate point and continuing in the next system. Click-and-drag editing of lines is not recommended.
