Addition of instruments midway through piece
Hello,
I'd like to find out how to add an instrument partway through a piece of music without having to 'hide' the unused staff. Hiding the staff gives up a lot of available space.

What do you mean? "Hide empty staves" takes up no space at all.

I don't want to see an instrument line with a bunch of rests. So I right-clicked the measure and clicked 'measure properties'. The box shows "Staff | Visible | Stemless", Visible has a checkbox and I unchecked visible. However, Staff 2 is visible but staff 1 is there but invisible, hence the open space.
How can I begin Staff 1 at measure 16?

Rather than making individual measures invisible—which does leave the same amount of space—go up the Style menu, choose "General...," and use the "Hide empty staves" checkbox. That makes everything necessary disappear automatically. Like this:
