Add "Measures Controlled" property to volta properties panel

• Jul 6, 2016 - 17:21

I had a problem with repeats not working properly that ultimately I discovered had been caused by my using the mouse to stretch a volta across multiple measures. That is apparently treated as a cosmetic operation only, and doesn't actually cause the volta functionally to span multiple measures.

This fact is documented in the help section on voltas, albeit a bit obscurely.

Since it isn't possible to tell by visual inspection of the volta bracket in the score what range of measures a volta actually governs, I'd like to see that information added to the properties displayed in the volta properties panel. It should also be possible to set the range there.

Thanks!

For the record, you can see the anchors of a volta if you double click it. We could indeed add yet again another control in the inspector with measure range but I think the proper fix would be to let user changes the span with the mouse.

I assumed that that was not implemented initially in order to permit cosmetically desired changes to the volta to be made without affecting its anchors. But perhaps if double-clicking the volta were to make the anchors for both ends visible immediately (which it currently doesn't), then the anchors could be moved independently (with the mouse) from the end bars. And yes, I agree, that would be the best of all!

It still seems to me, though, that it would make sense to represent the anchor points in the properties panel too. That would then be a convenient place to set all important properties of the volta using the keyboard.

I don't think having to calculate measure numbers would be a very convient way to control volta endpoints. And in any event, it would only for voltas, that same method couldn't be used for other lines. I'd rather not see that sort of inconsistency introduced especially if it doesn't really do a good job of solving the problem. i'd rather it just be easier to control the endpoints directly.

I actually dislike the fact that slur anchors auto-adjust when dragging the endpoints, because it is too easy to accidentally change the anchors when you are really trying to fine tune the appearance. This wouldn't be an issue with voltas, though - the sort of slight adjustments that would be common would be in no danger of fooling MuseScore into thinking you are trying to change the anchors.

Perhaps you're right. I'm not sufficiently versed in all the ways people might want to change the appearance of the volta to know one way or the other.

It doesn't seem to me that that part would be too difficult, as measure numbers of the anchors that would put the user in the ballpark would already be specified as soon as the volta was put in place; e.g., 58 and 58. If I knew I wanted two additional measures, I'd just change the right anchor to 60 (or the left one to 56, depending on which way I need the extension to go).

But the original thing I was trying to do was change the anchors with the mouse, which certainly seemed reasonable to me at the time. So if that capability had been in place, we'd never have had this conversation. :)
