Not sure what a layer means to you. If it's something you can hide like a photoshop layer. It's not supported.
If you want to have several voices on one staff. It's not a layer (like in finale) but a voice.

Would musescore ever consider adding layers a la photoshop/GIMP? It would be useful to be able to toggle which parts of a song were visible. In my particular case, it would be helpful if song authors could include multiple 'layers' for finger numbering for piano. For example, there could be layers that show 1) finger numbering for every single note; 2) finger numbering as suggested by author; 3) no finger numbering. As it stands, most song authors include few if any finger numbering suggestions. Perhaps if the finger numbering could be easily toggled, more authors would include it.

That is exactly the functionality that I was looking for. I hope that the musescore developers continue to work on it so that it can eventually be included as a standard (not experimental) feature. Thank you!
Finale uses the word "layers". Most everyone else uses the word "voices" including MuseScore. In the handbook see: Voices
I 've got the point!
many thanks
