I just think you should use the violins at the beginning ^^
It's dark and dramatic for me. Which I love in a piece like this. I am not an expert on theory. But you definitely succeeded in creating the piece you wanted.
It was good. However, when writing for SATB, one general rule is is that you not make the distance between each part more than an octave. The only exception to this rule is between tenor and bass, then you may make the distance between them an octave if you desire.
