changing instruments
I have written a piece for voice and piano, but at the end of every chorus I have a vocal chant that I want to be accompanied by a soft percussive sound. Right now I have that chant entered in the same staff as voice, but it always plays back on the instrument I've assigned to voice (alto flute). I know how to change it during playback using the mixer, but I don't know how to save those changes. I tried "Save", but the instrument changes didn't save. Also, when I changed the "alto flute" to "percussion" using "mixer" it affected the whole piece, and not just that one section. Do I need to add another staff for just a percussion instrument? If so, how?

In the current version, yes, adding another staff is the way to do this - via create ->instruments. You can then use Hide Empty Staves (under style->edit general style) so it only shows where needed, and the voice staff - which wojld presumably be empty at that spot - will be hidden there.
For 2.0, it appears there will be more direct support for changing instruments in a sngle staff.

Thanks for your help with the changing of instruments. That has worked fine. Now I'm struggling with the voltas. Those volta measures won't play at all. The playback just skips them. I have 5 sections, and each section has an English and a Spanish part that can be sung separately or together, then the chorus and chant goes inbetween each of those sections. I'm trying to have it repeat the chorus after each section without having to copy and paste it after each section, but so far no success. Anyone know how to do this? I have the 1.1 version, and Windows XP.

Do you have playback of repeats turned on? Are you following the instructions given in the Handbook in the section on Voltas?

Yes, I've been studying the handbook, and today I tried the voltas again, and they worked well this time. I don't know what I did wrong last time. Thanks for replying!
