input of chord notations
I cannot input any chord notations. Apparently, I'm not selecting the note properly. In any case it's beyond my comprehension right now. Any ideas from anyone???

Your request isn't quite clear for me.
If you want to insert chord symbols use ctrl+k.

If you want to add a further note to the note you've inserted, be sure that you're in the note input mode.

Select the note (maybe move to the position with the arrow keys; or select the note, before you're in the note input mode, then activate this mode) and insert the further note.
I normally use the method to press the shift key and the letter of the note when I want to add a note to a chord.

After selecting the note, you can immediately add notes to the chord by shift + letter a, b, ..., g.
You don't need to explicitely enter Note input mode, Musescore does it for you.

Thank you. I now see how to build the chords from your comments. How do I get the notation (text) above the notes?? For example, if I want to have the notation C7 or F6 above the respective chords.

Select a note of the chord, press Ctrl+K (Mac: ⌘+K) (or choose in the menu add->text-> chord symbol) and enter the chord name with your keyboard. Move with Space to the next note or rest and enter on the next chord change the next chord name.
Btw: in the menu style->general you can adjust the appearance:
