How to write Hymn with SATB in MuseScore with 2 Clefs.

• Dec 13, 2011 - 02:38

I'm new to using MuseScore. I want to put a hymn into MuseScore with traditional Soprano and Alto parts in a single treble clef, and Tenor and Bass parts in a single bass clef. And I want to put lyrics between the treble and bass clefs.

I entered the title, composer, etc., and selected the 4 voices in the menu. But the screen renders 2 treble clefs and 2 bass clefs.

How can I get MuseScore to render 4 part SATB with 2 clefs? Also, I will need to add text. Please let me know if this is possible, and if there is a template, or a good tutorial to walk me through this. Thank you.

Try this -

Create a new score. Enter name, etc. as usual. When it is time to enter the voices, simply choose Soprano and Bass. Proceed with the key signature/time signature, etc.

When the score is created, you'll see treble and bass clefs. You'll also notice the top says Soprano, and the bottom says Bass. Select the first measure on the treble clef, then right click, choose Staff Properties, and there you can delete that text, or enter whatever text you desire. Do the same thing for the bass clef.

If you desire, you could add a bracket. Go to the bracket palette and click an drag the appropriate bracket to do this.

Next, begin entering notes using voices. You can find information on using voices here:

http://musescore.org/en/handbook/voices

If you want, make each part its own voice. Start with the upper voice on each line first, then the lower voice. If the stems on the notes do not automatically flip, you can always select a note, then type 'x' on your keyboard to flip the stem.

Next, I chose the alto line, and began to enter the lyrics. Go to Style - Edit general style, and adjust the upper and lower lyric spacing accordingly to get the look you want. I've attached a picture to see what I ended up with.

Hope this helps.

Brian, that's what I'm shooting for -- what you posted in the sample score.jpg file. I'll give your instructions a shot.

In the meantime, I found the Hymn template in the create options. But I'm just using piano for the music. Voices would be better, so I'll follow your instructions.

The chorus of this song has separate lyrics for some of the parts. The time signature is 4/4. One of the measures for instance has sopranos and basses sustaining 3 beats on one note, followed by a quarter note; while altos and tenors have 6 eighth notes then a quarter note. On that measure, I need to insert 2 lines of lyrics, and I need to enter those separate note structures on the treble and bass clefs, but I don't understand how to do that.
