1. Select the note.
2. Add a tie by pressing 'S'.
3. Double-click the slur to bring up the edit handles.
4. Drag the right-most handle to an appropriate position.

Note that S adds a slur, not a tie, but indeed, they look similar enough that one can be used in place of the other in situations like this. There are some cases where you might not be able to add a slur - like if there is no note following - but you can create an invisible note to attach the slur to if necessary. I notice there there is also a pair of symbols in the text symbols palette (F2 while entering staff text) that look enough like a a short tie to use in a pinch.
