Whole notes below eight notes

I recently stumbled on MuseScore and so I'm learning. So far I have not found, in the MuseScore Handbook, how to input shorter duration notes (like eighths) that are moving above longer duration notes (like a whole note). I only been able to input a single string of notes and/or chords. Can someone direct me to the correct location in the handbook that explains this? Thank you.
