increase space between SA and TB in closed SATB

• Nov 30, 2016 - 22:05

Hi. I would like to make more room for lyrics in the closed SATB, and save it as a template. How do I move the G and F clefs a bit to make some room?

If they are created as a single instrument with two staves, it is the "Grand staff distance" setting in Style / General / Page. If they are created as two separate instruments of one staff each, it is "Staff distance".

but actually, it shouldn't normally be necessary to do this - space for lyrics should be added automatically. If you are having trouble, please attach the score you are having problems with so we can see if maybe there is something else going on.

Wow! Perfect! Many thanks.

I meant to add vertical space, so that ledger lines won't compete with lyrics.

I am attaching exactly the type of score I want to create. It is very simple, with bars serving only (a) as conceptual breaks or (b) as a way to indicate a repeat (no repeats in the attached score). In other words I want arbitrary bar placement. It would be nice if I didn't have to hide every bar as I work. Also I don't want any ties auto-created as measures--even if invisible--are crossed with note values that exceed the theoretical measure.

Thank you!

Carl

Usually it's best to post the actual MuseScore file (mscz or mscx) rather than an image but I think if you increase the value in Style ->General ->Page ->Lyrics bottom margin you will get what you want.

To confirm: lyrics top bottom / margin are the setting you want, then, not the staff distance settings. Increasing the staff distances would still potentially have the lyrics too close to the staff with lots of wasted space between.

And Split & Join are indeed how you create "free meter" music. Join up a bunch of measures, enter notes until you reach the point you'd like the measure to end, then do a split at that point.
