Quarter Rests

'Note Entry' enabled: In the toolbar, you click on the rest icon, click on a value and then click on the bar.

'Note Entry' disabled: Click on a rest in the bar and on the toolbar, click a value.

There are two easy ways of doing it:

1. Make sure you are in note-entry mode, either by clicking on the N on the toolbar, or by pressing N on the keyboard. Then click on the note duration on the toolbar (in your case, a quarter note) and click on the rest button. That will then let you insert rests of the same duration as the note duration selected when you click on the staff.

2. Make sure you are in note-entry mode. Select a quarter note duration either by clicking on it on the toolbar or by pressing the number 5. Then press the number 0. The number 0 will insert a rest of the selected duration.

Do youself a favour, and download or look at the MuseScore manual. It is easily available in PDF form, and by searching within that PDF, you will be able to easily find solutions to most problems.
