cant stretch measures enough to fit 4 on a line
On the attached file, I can't seem to fit the pickup + first 4 measures on one line.
I've tried selecting all 4.5 bars and repeatedly doing "{", and tried reducing the stretch value under Properties very low (20%).
It might not look good once I get all of it on one line, but in the meantime, I must be bumping into a limit somewhere.
BTW this is on 2.0.3 release 3c7a69d on Windows-11 64-bit.
Thanks....Lyle

I used { to eliminate all stretch and went to Layout | Page settings... menu and changed Scaling (staff space (sp)) to 1.650mm
Looks like what you wanted. This dialog is soooo nice.

Thanks for the input, and yes, your file has the pickup + first 4 bars on one line.
But I tried what you suggest, and can't get it to work:
- set stretch to zero (for entire song even)
- set Layout -> PageSettings -> Scaling=1.650
I wind up with the pickup and first 3 measures on 1 line.
I can set Scaling to 1.450, then reduce Stretch on the 4.5 measures to 80%, and it works.
Odd though that things work differently for you than for me.
And though I've looked through the manual, forum, and Mastering book, it's still not clear what the Stretch thing is all about.
Thanks....Lyle

I think a good explanation of it would be useful in the handbook. I don't understand why different people get different results unless I have some so default set up on mine different than yours.

Your version didn't "remove" all stretch, it actually set the stretch to 0.0, which is entirely different - that's basically decreasing it the most possible. To remove all stretch, use Layout / Reset Stretch - this sets it back to 1.0 where it belongs. That is, the value is a *multiplier*, not an *additive*.
Anyhow, after resetting stretch to the default, setting the staff space to 1.650 doesn't quite fit four bars to the line. But reducing stretch a couple of notches from there works. You'll quickly see why this doesn't happen by default, though - the lyrics are awfully crowded.

Another nice thing to have explained in the handbook.

That made sense and works too. 8-) Thanks, Marc

Stretch controls the amount of space between notes. The default amount of space is determines by the staff size and the setting of Style / General / Measure / Spacing. Increasing stretch basically adds a little more space - literally stretching it out. Decreasing stretch does exactly the opposite.

You're not the handbook

But that sentence might be good for the handbook :-)
I went to page settings and changed the width to fit the last measures notes. Incase anyone else is still looking for an answer maybe this will help :)
