Whole bar rests won't disappear
I'm composing piano music with 4 "voices", but even when I've inserted the 3rd and 4th voice, the whole-bar rest in the bass clef remains. I've worked out how to move the rests to the bottom or how to mark them as invisible, but is there a more satisfactory solution, please?

You can have four voices in each stave. Put your voices 3 and 4 in the bass as voices 1 and 2. If that's not what you want then post your score and it will be easier to sort out the problem.

Yes, you wouldn't normally need voices 3 & 4 at all - just use 1 & 2 in each staff.
If you are trying to show all voices in one staff and thus don't need to see *anything* in the other staff, still enter them in two separate staves, then use the Cross staff beaming facility to move notes from one staff to the other. Works just fine even if no actual beams are involved.

Crossbeaming is used in the attached extract both in its "usual" form and to avoid rests in the bass clef stave.
You can delete rests in Voice 2, 3, 4 but you can't delete the rest in Voice 1. You can - as you have discovered - make the rest invisible.
You can, though, swap notes (and rests) around between voices:
Suppose you have rests in Voice 2 that you don't want to show - you can just click on the and press [Delete]. Suppose, though, that you have rests in Voice 1 that you don't want to show - in this case, go to the menu and chose Edit -> Voices -> Exchange Voice 1-2: Voice 2 now has the rests and you can delete them if you want.
