Formatting from an imported .xml file

• Sep 12, 2012 - 03:05

I've read through a ton of formatting posts and tried lots of the advice but none of it's working for my specific problem.

My friend created a .mus file with Finale, which I converted to .xml and then opened with MuseScore to make some changes. However, except for the first page, there is only one system per page after that. I fiddled with the page fill threshold, I fiddled with the system distance, even the page print margins. I can't get more than one system per page!

What am I missing?

Tough to say without seeing the score. But in general, MusicXML files come in with breaks already set - if you wish to change the layout, you first step would be to delete the existing breaks (the green icons at the end of each system).

A screenshot just shows what you have already described. A score allows others to analyse it, detect problems that may be fixable for your piece and may help others in similar situations. If there is a problem with MuseScore (rather than just your particular score) then it gives the developers the opportunity to fix it in the next version.

By all means attach a screenshot if it will enhance your description but in cases like this it is helpful to have the both the XML and the MuseScore scores.

The best is to upload the file. There are few things you can try to check if the file is ok. You said you have already changed system distance and page margins.
- Try different page sizes to check if you can see more than one system per page (Layout->Page Settings->Page Size)
- Rescale the page
- Hide the empty bars ( Style->Edit General Style-> Score->Hide empty bars). This should fill in a lot of empty space.

Did any of these things work? If not, create a new score with the same instruments and just copy/paste.
