Alternate Tunings
Hi,
I have been using musescore for a bit now and am very excited for the guitar tab edition to be released in 2.0. However, I would greatly appreciate an option to "create an instrument" a la Sibelius, and be able to set the number of strings an instrument has and their tuning appropriately.

Something of this is already possible (in ver 2.0 of course)
Once you created a score (for instance using the built-in instrument most similar to the one you need), by right-click on an empty spot of its staff (i.e. not occupied by a note, a rest, a bar, ...) and selecting "Staff properties", it is possible to change the number of strings and their tunings ("String Data"). Of course, this has to be re-done for each score.
Alternatively, once you created one score with the customized instrument, you may save it as a template and re-use it as a base for other similar scores.
Is this near enough to your needs?
Of course, the final solution would be allowing an easy customization of the built-in instrument lists (which is possible, but far from easily). However, such a feature seems not to be planned. It might be worth opening a request for it specifically.

Yes this sounds adequate for now. The main thing I want to do is tune my guitar/bass/everything to Eb, as I like to compose in "baroque tuning" (lol). I think your final solution is similar to what Sibelius does. It would be nice but something is better than nothing. How do I "open a request" for something like this? I thought that's what this forum was for?
BTW, I use Guitar Pro 5 more often than not because of this, and a few other features that are simply easier to use, but I would like to start using MuseScore exclusively. Primarily because there are things you simply cannot do in Guitar Pro (multiple voices) and also because I whole-heartedly support this movement (this kind of a program shouldn't cost what Sibelius costs).

Two ways:
1) Create a new thread in this Feature Requests sub-forum with a specific title, a description of the feature and so on. As an instrument editor does not apply only to guitarists, but potentially to most MuseScore users, such a post would be more likely to attract peoples who might be interested in the feature but have nothing to do with tunings.
2) Create a new issue in the issue tracker , labelling it as a feature request.
The intended flow is to use 1) first to see if there is interest and if any discussion is started which may help focusing the feature and identify potential complexities. And use 2) once a rather clear idea is reached. But there are no strict policies.
I do not use Guitar Pro, but I can easily imagine a specialized programme can do some things easier; the down-side is that it will be more limited or more cumbersome to use in other areas. This is why there are many notation programmes out there! And it is our 'right' as users to choose and/or to push developers to improve what needs to be improved.
