Merging stems and tails

When using two voices on a staff and you wish to orientate both stems in the same direction the tails of the quaver and other shorter length notes do not merge (automatically). This creates the wrong presentation. E.g. If voice 2 is middle C of a quaver length and voice 1 is the E above, also of quaver length; when the stems are rotated in the same direction it looks like a major third of a semi-quaver length. Is it possible to automatically merge stems/tails of notes of the same duration that are orientated in the same direction? It would be a great help as doing it manually is both fiddly and time consuming.
