Setting up a new instrument

Hello, I am new to MuseScore so please forgive any new user errors. I am trying to set things up so that the instrument I play is defined within the system.
I play northumbrian pipes which have a limited range, are not fully chromatic and are a transposing instrument. Looking at the documentation I can see how to add the pipes in a basic fashion but wondered if I can set up things so that the notes outside my range (or that do not exist on my pipes) are highlighted.
Any ideas or suggestions would be great
