How to make Jazz notes
please see the attached picture. i would like to make this on top of my score. then i don't know if it will work on playback.

I don't know about displaying what you want, but just for fun, you might want to play with Display -> Play Panel and then the drop-down menu with Straight, Swing and Shuffle. See what happens with playback with the three different settings.

I think the best way to recreate that notation would be to create it separately as a graphic and insert it that way.
But FWIW, this notation would virtually *never* be used by an actual jazz musician. You do sometimes see it in scores meant for musicians who are *not* familiar with jazz, but a jazz musician wouldn't need to be told what swing eighths are. And triplets are actually a pretty poor approximation of actual swing eighths. So I personally would not bother putting that notation in at all - just say "swing eighths", and people should know what you mean.
The Play Panel described above *does* affect playback as it should, though - it just doesn't produce this notation.
Hello and thanks for the reply though. if the shuffle sign was not necessary, so why is it on both Sibelius and Finale? I've been using it forever. for example you send a lead sheet to someone and do not have time to explain.

Fwiw, I wasn't saying there is never a reason to use it or for notation software to support it. I was just trying to explain to someone who may not have realized it that this symbol is definitely *not* commonly used in jazz. So just because the sheet music he was starting from used it, doesn't mean he has to as well. He might have thought it was something that had to be there. If he is really trying to produce music for jazz musicians, as the thread title implied he might be, he'd be better off without it. But indeed, if he is producing music for people who *aren't* jazz musicians, it could possibly be useful. Still, most know what "swing" means withut seeing that special notation, and if they don't, it's pretty unlikely they'd be able to interpret the notation correctly anyhow.

You would much more likely see that symbol in band music where the players tend to be play various genres of music. Also it can be used to distinguish between that lighter triplet method of swing and the more pronounced swing denoted by a dotted eighth-sixteenth that may be found in older pieces. How accurately the difference might be interpreted with novice players is uncertain :) .
For jazz players and most experienced players the word "swing" will do it.

in concert band music. It is often used in medlies that mix snippets of songs so that only a portion of the entire work would be swung. It has always seemed strange to me that the shuffle or swing was in the play panel and could only affect the entire work, or not. It would seem better to have a special function of tempo texts that turn the swing on or off as needed in the work. In my view, there should be 3 tempo properties: frequency (BPM), Swing ratio (default 50% is straight, 66% Jazz, and 75% Shuffle), and the note group that is swung (eg. selecting 8th note is the most common, but there are cases where it is more appropriate to swing 16th notes.
This idea of setting 3 parameters for a "tempo text" is great, and should hopefully be implemented as far as I'm concerned. It could also permit to play correctly a section notated "straight" in a piece where everything else is swung.
The idea of selecting swing 8th or swing 16th is great, I would have needed that just last month. Percentage, great also !
So, the idea is good !! I can only encourage developers to have a look at it.

I figured it out! Add a tempo change and copy+paste the quarter note (you can do that, by the way) Then, you can place as many as you want! Also, by simply looking up "Music note copy paste" in a search engine like google you can copy any notes and paste them into your text in the music.
