Selective Select feature

• Apr 3, 2013 - 23:00

I tried another software package that had a very powerful Select feature that I would love to see in MuseScore. It let me select one or more common elements in my entire score. For instance, I could select all rests in voice 2, select all beams in the score, select all repeats, and much more, or any combination of elements.

You actually can do most of this already. Right click an element and you get a menu with a Select submenu that allows you to select all similar, all similar on same staff, same voice, etc. but it's not always the case you can *do* what you want with the seletion. For instance, selecting all rests in voice 2 would be great if you could then adjust them all downward but that doesn't work.

Anyhow, what you probably also would want is the ability to control what elements within a selection get copied during a paste operation. That's also a pretty common request that I would very much like to see implemented.

Actually, you can move all the rests downwards after selecting them all, just keeping Ctrl (in Windows) pressed while dragging one of the selected rests.
[ This works in 1.3. In 2.0 Nightly builds this Ctrl + Drag allows only for horizontal repositioning of all rests, but vertical (and also horizontal) repositioning can be done via the Inspector ]

Thanks for pointing that out! I had forgotten it works for mouse drag. But I prefer to use the keyboard to make sure I am moving a consistent amount, and contraining to vertical. And of course in 2.0, this particular operation won't be needed much, since multi-voice rests are positipned better by default.

Anyhow, bottom line - there's a decent amount of flexibility in selection already - more than perhaps is apparent at first. But some limitations as well. Especially regarding copy & paste. So definitely room for improvement.

In fact Musescore is pretty good at global selections.

The area that is lacking is when you want to select elements in just a couple of bars.

That currently involves CTRL+Selecting every element you want to edit. Far too time-consuming!

I find myself unable to select a voice other than for the whole score. It would be very useful to be able to define the area within which you are selecting. When I want to transpose, add articulations, or copy or delete a phrase of a given voice I can only select it by CTRL Click on each individual note.

It's actually possible to do this sort of thing in some cases, although non-obvious and not as easy as it could be. For instance, to select all notes in voice 2 for measures 38-40, start by selecting measures 38-40 in full. Then right click any note in voice *1*, Select / More, click "Same voice", "Same staff", and "Subtract from selection".
