Variation in final verse from verses 1&2: how to alter the notes and lyrics
I have a fairly simple piece the consists of verse-chorus, with the chorus having a first and second ending that returns to the verse and a third ending that closes out the music.
In verses 1 and 2, in the middle of the verse there is a measure that consists of a dotted half (we are in 3/4 time) and the next measure starts on a half note. In the third verse, however, the first measure has a half note followed by a quarter which acts as a pickup to the second measure, which still has the same half note. The lyrics include this pickup as well.
If it were not for the change from dotted half to half and quarter, adding a third line of verse would be really easy. However, I am not sure how on the same staff to show a variation like this in one verse.

make the dotted half a half and a quarter, then tie them and change that tie to be dotted to indicate that is isn't allways a tie.
You can add a second voice into the same measure as the dotted half:
Add a (hidden) half rest followed by the quarter note into the appropriate measure. You can make the note head smaller, or use parentheses to differentiate it. I've seen both.
The third verse lyric can be attached to that quarter note, adjusting lyric position by dragging, if necessary.
