Make measure longer to reach the end of the line

• Jun 28, 2013 - 14:25

Probably a really easy question, but I couldn't figure it out after playing around with the options. How can I make the Eb7 measure longer so it reaches the end of the line and eliminates that gap? Simply adding more stretch seems to make Eb7 longer by making the previous 3 measures shorter.

It's very difficult to help with problems judging only from a picture of a score - the actual MSCZ is almost always better. It's not normal that the measure would not already be going to the end of the line, and the only way any of us would be able to figure out why it isn't in this case is to look at the file ourselves.

It actually looks different when I open it - that measure (24) is on a line all by itself. NO sure why it looks so different, but I can get a sense of what's wrong. What seems to have happened is that the "stretch" parameter in that measure has been set to a crazy high value. Several others measures have oddly high stretch values. I'm guessing you were playing with stretch trying to figure out how to get things the way you wanted, but went way overboard.

So, start out by doing Layout->Reset Stretch. On my system - running 1.3 on Windows 7 - that actually fixes everything, and there are four measures per line because of your line breaks, just as I assume you want.

Reset stretch does make all the measures line up on the right side of the page, but I wanted to give more room to measures 24 and 28 while shrinking 21-23 and 25-27 because it looks pretty weird with the current measure sizes.

I attached an updated file

For comparison, here's what it looks like on my mac

Hmm. Something is very odd. On my system, your updated file looks beautiful. I mean, I suppose maybe there is some room to fine tune measure widths *slightly*, but nothing like the absolute mess in your screen shot. Are you sure that's from the exact same version of the file? Does it look that way each time you open the file, or maybe did MuseScore somehow get itself into a corrupted state that closing it down and reopening would fix? What version of MuseScore, on what OS?

Looking at your screen shot, it seems like for some reason the page size is smaller (or margins larger) than on my system, so there just isn't enough room to fit four measures on a line - not even close in the case of 25-28. But based on the settings I see in Layout / Page Settings (Letter page size, space = 2mm, 10mm side margins), those measures should fit with no problem. Here's how measures 25-28 look on my system, just opening up the attachment and changing nothing:

Very odd....I reopened the file and now it looks perfectly fine, just as in your screenshot. I guess closing and reopening sorted it out. Thanks for taking the time to help me out.
