Cannot enter Voice 1 notes

• Oct 18, 2013 - 14:19

I am trying to arrange Duruflé's Ubi Caritas for a small 4-part church choir. I imported a pre-existing MIDI file and am in the process of re-assigning parts as best I can.

At bar 29 (see attached file) in the top Soprano part I cannot enter notes at all in voice 1. I notice there were not even rests in the bar.

I can however add notes and rests in Voices 2, 3 or 4.

Very strange. Any thoughts, anyone?

Many thanks

Andrew

See attachment.
I copy/pasted the alto line into the soprano part to 'enable' the missing rests (as best as I can figure).
Then I deleted the alto notes, so you can add different notes.
(I left the lyrics. They can be deleted.)

I copy/pasted the alto part from measure 28 (the last instance of a 'good' measure) into the soprano. After which I changed the two notes above the lyric 'cero' in measure 28 back to the 'B' notes.
Underquark's solution is admittedly more elegant. :-)
Regards...

Select the "empty" measures.
Go to Edit -> Voices -> Exchange Voice 1-2

(If you accidentally select a section with notes in it then repeat the process to turn them back to Voice 1 and then delete any offending rests).

You need to re-set your parameters ..
You have two tenor parts that are in conflict ..
Re-name one of them ..
Right click on ten_1 .. Re-name it Tenor 1 / T-1
Right click on Tenor .. Re-name it Tenor 2 / T-2

Hi. Thanks for replying.

I'm not quite sure what you mean about the two tenor parts being in conflict? They have different names as it is. The ten_1 part is the one I am going to delete as I only have one tenor :) Hence I renamed the ten_2 part Ténor.

It was my understanding that you were not able to place notations on the ten 1 staff ..

I sent your piece back to you with the corrections made and you should be able to do this now ..

Basically Midi or playback becomes confused ..
When you add an instrument or voice .. say tenor to your piece you have a couple of choices, can either add up to 4 voices to the same staff or add an additional staff to the piece and split the parts, as you did .. however the system gets a little confused as to which one to use unless you re-name the 2nd staff and the dx .. say to Tenor1 and Tenor 2 and the dx Tn1 and Tn2 as well ..

Your name for the staff also need to match the parameters that you set ..

Click on the full name of the staff at the begining of the piece (Tenor ) and a box will appear .. it will then make more sense to you .. This is where you can change the names of that staff .. say to Tenor 1 and dx Tn-1 .. or Tenor 2 and dx Tn-2 .. etc ..

A better example .. a MIDI uses channels to send data through .. usually anywhere up to 32 ..
Each channel is automatically assigned a specific name .. Flutes, Clarinets, Alto Sax etc ..

When you designate flutes, it assigns a channel .. if you do this twice, it gets confused and wont allow it since it already assigned a channel to that designation .. So you have to edit the parameters, by slightly changing the name ... like an IP address ..
