Breaths and Pauses

I am trying to create exercises and scales for a friend. The arpeggio starts with a quarter note, has four measures of sixteenth notes, ending on another quarter note, before starting another series sixteenth note measures. I want to include a breath mark between the quarter notes and the sixteenth notes, but the software connects the quarter note and the sixteenth note which covers up the breath mark. I've tried to put the breath mark right after the quarter note and before inputting the sixteenth note in hopes that the software will recognize the breath mark and NOT connect the to notes. That doesn't work. How is the quarter note and sixteenth note inputted without the connecting bar?
