Is it possible to enter chords and a strum pattern
I'm guessing that what I want to do requires Band in a Box and is not currently possible in MuseScore, but what the heck, I decided to ask.
Is it possible to enter chord names and some kind of strum pattern, perhaps as drum notation? Could this be one staff, so I could add a bass line or melody?
Thanks in advance.

This is not possible, but could be asked in the "Feature request" Forum. It's not really a bug report although it is asking for direction.

The name of this forum is somewhat ambiguous. I didn't realize it's intended primarily for bug reports.

@ Timborino: Re: 'Support and bug reports'
As it turned out - judging by the responses to your query - the term 'strum pattern' may itself be slightly ambiguous.
Marc's reference to slash notation fits within the term 'support' -- a perfect match for this forum.
Xavierjazz, referring to 'strumming' the chord rhythms during playback, mentioned that it is more of a feature request, rather than a bug.
So, it's no big deal...
(FWIW -- I, myself, thought you meant 'slash notation'.)

Bug reports *and* support questions. So no problem asking here if the program can do this. But then, assuming your followup question is, "could this feature be added someday", that would be more appropriate for the feature request forum. No big deal, though.
This request has come up before. It strikes me as something that at the very least, some day aa plugin could maybe be written to do some version. But it's unlikely to ever be as good as BIAB. There is a free / open source program called Impro-Visor that can do a good job, and I think the way forward is probably to improve integration with that program.
Hmm, if you mean what i think you do, then yes Musescore can do this, and quite easily. Chord symbols can be added above the staff as described by [[nodetitle:Chordname]] in the handbook. If by strum patters you mean rhythms indicated by nktes with slashes for heads, you can enter the notes normally then change the noteheads to slashes by selecting the region. right clicking, selecting Note Proerties, and selecting slash from the notehead style dropdown. Or you can use the Notehead palette. Or, you can install and rune Slash Notation plugin (see Plugins menu at right of this page) which automates this process as well as that for a couple of other types of notation (rhythms above staff, also filling a measure with stemless slashes).

I assumed, since he mentioned Band in a box, that he means a strum pattern played using the MIDI engine, not notation. While Marc is correct re: notation, I assumed the other.

Ah yes, if you need it to automatically *play* the chords for you, indeed, this is not possible. But simlly creating this type of notation is not a problem.
I wrote a two-part tutorial on lead sheets that covers these issues and more:

Thanks. Ya, I meant to ask if MuseScore could play the chords according to some kind of rhythm pattern. Apparently not. Tutorials appreciated.
