Critique Wanted on a Band Piece
I'd posted a topic like this a while ago, and it's currently buried under a ton of other topics, but I'd really like some feedback on a band piece I'm working on (i.e., how to get it up to par with something bands would actually play). I think it sounds okay, personally, but I don't think it's as good as it could be (seeing as I'm only a beginning composer). The trouble is that I have no idea how to improve it--and that's why I'm turning here.
The attached file is my first attempt at the first movement, and I'm currently sketching out movement 2. I'm open to anything constructive, so fire away. :)

To bring that one up again, you could have responded there...
The solo at the beginning was way too long, especially for without an accompaniment. You can either split up the solo and give it to different sections or add in at least some whole notes in other sections (or keep it as it is). I also think the piece is really repetitive and boring to listen to. You should introduce a few different melodies, and combine them to make one big shout section (in my opinion).
I attached a short piece I quickly made as an example.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely keep it in mind as I write the next draft. :)
