Is it possible to adjust the horizontal position of notes?

• Jan 22, 2018 - 02:42

I've recently started using MuseScore for the purpose of transcribing and then transposing some music which I recently purchased. (It's a solo voice version of "O Magnum Mysterium" by Morten Lauridsen.) There are a few places where I'd like to be able to move the position of notes horizontally. Is it possible to do this in MuseScore? For example, in the screenshot, I'd love to be able to have the 2 dotted half notes align.

It is also possible for the dotted 1/2 note and 1/4 notes C's to share note heads by making one of the note heads invisible. The two dotted 1/2's will then line up.

Hmm, many things seem not right with the above. If the dotted half notes are on the same beat, they should already align by default. It looks to me like perhaps you have accidentally entered the low "E" into the wrong voice so it is on beat 3 and not beat 2 where you want it. It also looks like you've done something to mess up the alignment of the rests on beat 1, which probably isn't helping, and the two C's in the top staff have also been moved into incorrect position, which is messing things up further. And the weird looks tie (or is it a slur?) on the D's is also suspicious - it looks like they has been some fiddling around that shouldn't have happened. Then there is also an apparently problem with the D&E chord that appears to be in voice 2 and hence on beat 5, but there aren't enough notes in the other voices for that to be the case.

Basically, it seems the music has not been entered correctly, and that is why things aren't aligning. Best would be to post the actual score - not just a picture - and then a full description (or picture) of what you are trying to achieve would help.

It should virtually never be necessary to move notes to make them align properly.

Thanks for your reply, Marc. I'm not sure exactly what I did when I entered those notes initially, but I did just try a test on a duplicate document, and you're absolutely correct - they lined up just like they're supposed to do! I've gone over the score multiple times looking for errors in notes that I've entered as well as markings that I missed. Also, funky slur/ties that somehow were overlooked. The wierd tie that you noted was one of several that I had to fix throughout the score! Again, I appreciate your comments. MuseScore is a wonderful piece of software with a definite learning curve!
