Multiple triggers on midi input

When using realtime manual input with the keyboard sustain pedal configured as the "advance key" all functions work. However, I get many multiple triggers for each pedal press. Trying again with a key on the keyboard configured to advance, I get the same result. No matter how fast and light I press the key, I get at least two more triggers which show up as rests. Any suggestions as to a configuration or setting change?
