I had the same issue on a fresh installation of 2.3.1 (on a fresh installation of macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 as well, in case it's relevant).
Revert to factory settings solved the problem but does it make sense to revert to factory settings on a fresh installation? No setting was changed before.
Closed due to lack of information. If this still troubles you in the latest version (3.4.2), please look into the Synthesiser and see if there're any soundfonts loaded. If not, look into Edit > Preferences > General > Folders and see if the SoundFonts folders include the one(s) your soundfont(s) is/are in. If yes, please report, with the information of your working environment (OS, soundfont(s), etc.), in a new thread, best on the support forum first.

The synthesizer probably points to a previous folder that does not contain the new soundfont.
