Matching between Instruments ("i" command) and mixer (F10)

• Nov 18, 2018 - 19:09

I'm attaching a score in which I assigned 7 instruments (7 staves - 1 double for the piano). They all appear perfectly in the Instruments panel. But when I open the mixer, I see 10 instruments, not 7. For example, I have a staff for violins, but the mixer shows also an entry for violins-tremolo and violin-pizzicato, which I'm not using and have not assigned. The same goes for trumpet: the mixer shows the trumpet (OK) but also an entry for muted trumped "(trumpet-com surdina", in Portuguese). I assume that is not right because I have other scores in which this does not happen, that is, the mixer and the instruments panel agree 100%. Any idea why this might be happening in some of my scores?
P.S.: I'm also trying to attach my LCR.sf2 soundfont file, because that's where I selected the instruments from. That is to make sure the playback will make it sound correctly (mainly for the rithm section). But it won't go! So I gave up and attached just the mscz file.

There is no way around these channel assignments without editing the Intruments.xml or .mscx file, which I don't think would be worth the effort. Templates use the channels assigned when the template was created, so you could actually change the .mscx in a .mscz file that is saved as a custom template, this would make it more worthy of the effort. Perhaps if you ask nicely someone more familiar with this process than I am would make the adjustments to your attached file, that you could then save in the custom templates folder for later reuse.

FYI, in version 3 extra channels assigned to an instrument will be hidden until you press the + button to display them. This may be acceptable to you.

The instrument list is about selecting instruments, the mixer is about selecting sounds for those instruments. Most instruments only make one basic sound, so there is only one mixer channel for those instruments. But some instruments (like violin an trumpet) can make different sounds that you can switch between using staff text in your score (eg, "pizz" or "con sordino"), so the mixer provides separate channels for each sound that you can use with those instruments. This is normal and correct. As mentioned, in 3.0, the "extra" channels will be hidden by default.

Yes, Marc, you are absolutely right. The mixer, within the concept that you correctly exposed, doesn't have to reflect the instruments, but the sounds (in plural) they can make. So, there would eventually be more than one mixer channel for one instrument. I understand that. I guess I was just lazily wanting to open the mixer and see only the instrument/sounds I would really use. Oh, well, I'll wait until version 3 is stable and use the plus sign when necessary.
Thank you for the reply.

Since version 2.x won't be updated any more, any changes requested would not be possible before version 3. I was letting you know that what you are asking for is already in the works. BTW, the mixer needs fixed, but it should stay close in appearance to what it is in the alpha 2 version.

BTW, while we are talking about the mixer, there is a behavior in it that has caused me to inadvertently modify something I didn't intend to. I'm talking about the scrolling of the timbre for a sound. I think the mouse wheel should scroll through the timbre options only when the timbre combo is open down. Otherwise, you're scrolling through the instruments and all of a sudden, a timbre combo (closed) passes under the mouse cursor and zap! - a timbre change occurs, barely noticeable, when the idea was to scroll through the instruments. This has happened to me often enough to make me NOT use the scroll wheel at all, when dealing with the mixer. Of course, this only happens when the height of the mixer window isn't enough to display all the instruments, bringing therefore, the need to scroll through them. I hope this is a positive suggestion.

It's come up before, and I agree it can be annoying although this is fairly standard behavior for the controls used. The 3.0 mixer is different enough in its layout that I don't this will be an issue, even though it still use standard controls. The instruments are laid out horizontally like in a "real" mixer, so you don't pass over the sound selection control while scrolling.
