Acoustic Bass

I am curious why the Acoustic Bss is placed with the Guitars rather than the strings.

Regards.

The same reason guitar is not in strings.

Actually the acoustic bass is in both categories. In the strings category it is called "contrabass".

I am used to writing the bass part where the Bass sounds 1 octave lower that the notation.

Because of the material I write, mainly Salsa and Jazz, an "Acoustic Bass" sound is preferable because of it's attack and decay characteristics.

When you input for contrabass or acoustic bass a note on the third line with the default clef, is it sounding D3?

When you speak of the acoustic bass sound, are you referring to General MIDI program (sound) number 33? That sound is a contrabass pizzicato in contrast to General MIDI program number 44 which is a contrabass played arco, with the bow.

Because it is superfluous and somewhat irrational. Acoustic bass is only used in the instrument list to give the pizzicato sound of a contrabass; this sound should be assigned to the contrabass played pizzicato which is easy to do in the file instruments.xml.
