Updates and corrupted files

how to tackle files corrupted on updating MuseScore 3

Comments

Keep them in version 2. You can run both versions on your computer at the same time. It's possible some of the corruptions will be fixed in version 3.1 when it's released. There is some work being done under the hood that will help with corruptions, though I don't promise it will fix any specific corruption.

Thanks for the quick reply. In my case every single file has been corrupted after an update of MuseScore 3. I have hundreds of hours of work now unopenable on MuseScore 2, an important loss with scores such as my choir versions of "Messiah" and the like, written over years as conductor and choirmaster. I have only just learnt that I can make a pdf file of my scores using "export" and I have saved pdf copies of about 20 pieces I have arranged for a coming concert, but a pdf file does not allow me to edit.

At first the logo before a file looked like white MS, but from a few minutes ago all files now appear with a different logo looking more like an old cassette.

I have just tried to open the MuseScore 2 on my tablet and that now only produces an option to update to MuseScore 3.0.1, which was released last week.

Is there a link between updating Musescore 3, which seems to be a non-free version, and the corruption of the files?

Would it help to rest the computer to a time prior to the update? This should restore all computer settings to the state prior to the updating.

When you say your files are "corrupted" after updating to MuseScore 3, can you be more specific? I just tried to open the scores you attached and they seem fine to me. Neither was actually saved in MuseScore 3, though - these seem to be the MuseScore 3 originals.

If you have a file you believe to be corrupted, please attach it so we can investigate.

I have now re-downloaded MuseScore 3 and made a brief score to check if that downloading is working, and it seemed successful in MuseScore 3, but I can't find that score is! Consequent upon re-downoading, file logos have returned, replacing the new cassette-type file logo to the original. I still can't open any files. If I go into a score an bring up recent files, a few recent files are there showing the latest score.

MuseScore 2 might offer an option to update, but it in no way requires it. if you didn't uninstall it, then it is still there, and simply dismissing the update message will allow you to continue working with it normally.

Also, the be clear, there is no non-free version of the MuseScore score editing software. Never has been, never will be. But, there is also no version of the MuseScore score editing software for tablets, unless you mean a Windows computer with detachable keyboard. There is only the reader/player/"Songbook" app, which does not edit scores and cannot modify them in any way. And indeed, there are features of that app that are paid.

I'll leave the not being able to open MuseScore 3 to someone else, I don't understand what the problem is there.

As for not opening version 3 scores in version 2, that is not possible. When you open a version 2 score in 3, then save it, you are warned that you are about to replace your existing version 2 score, don't do that. Keep the version 2 scores and save the version 3 scores in a separate folder so you won't try to open a version 3 score in version 2. If you are on the verge of running out of hard disk space I suggest you find a cloud service for your version 2 scores and keep them there to free up room on your disk for your version 3 scores. Version 3 will likely never display the score exactly as it was in version 2. For the most part, there is no reason to convert version 2 scores to version 3 unless you plan on continuing to revise them. Otherwise keep versions 2 and 3 both on your computer and use the proper version for the score.

When you install version 3, all .mscz and .mscx files are associated with version 3, which has the blue background logo. If you double click one of these it will open in version 3. If you have not save the file with version 3, it will still open with version 2. See my other comment for more info.

Mike

Thanks for the reply.

I have ample hard disk space.

I can open MuseScore 2 and write a score and click the Save in the hope of saving the score. However, I cannot open the new score in the MuseScore " folder so it can't be saved for re-editing. When I click on File and then Open Recent, the score is there as written and can be re-edited and printed off from Open Recent, but I still can't open the file in the MuseScore 2 folder in my documents.

Clicking on the blue MuseScore 3 icon has no effect at all.

I think I'm missing something important here. Your sentence "I cannot open the new score in the MuseScore " folder so it can't be saved for re-editing" is incomplete?

If you save a file in MuseScore 2, you can always open it in MuseScore 2. Once you save it in MuseScore 3, you can't open that copy in version 2. Once version 3 is installed, double clicking a file will open it in version 3,

I suspect the OP is experiencing the same confusion I did after installing MS3. The problem is file associations -- what happens when you click on a file with the extension mscz may not be what you expect.

If this is the problem, my own, effective though brute force, solution, was to:

  • have separate folder for MS2 and MS3 files
  • have icon shortcuts on your desktop for both MS2 and MS3
  • only ever open a MS2 file by clicking on the MS2 shortcut icon, then going to the MS2 File menu within MS2 and using it to find and open an MS2 file
  • only ever open a MS3 file by clicking on the MS3 shortcut icon, then going to the MS3 File menu within MS3 and using it to find and open an MS3 file

As for simply opening an MS2 score in MS3 expecting it to look right and to be able to re-edit it using MS3 features, it seems like this is something that just isn't supported.

I think it was a mistake to keep the file extension mscz for MS3 files. I think it's bad practice to use the same file extension for what are in effect files which need to be opened by two different programs.

Again thanks for the quick response.

I have always had a separate folder for MS2 and MS3 files.

I have always had icon shortcuts for both MS2 and MS3

I have only ever opened an MS2 file by clicking on the MS2 shortcut icon, then going to the MS2 file menu within MS2 and using it to find and open an MS2 file

I have only ever opened an MS3 file by clicking on the MS2 shortcut icon, then going to the MS3 file menu within MS3 and using it to find and open an MS3 file

Until I downloaded the MS3 update I had no problems. However, I remember a file from MS2 "appearing" in MS3.

I will try using system restore, which should solve the problem. I can't work on all my music without MuseScore waiting for an MS3 update which is not guaranteed to work. Alternatively, I could buy a cheap laptop just for MuseScore, but in the end buying Sibelius might now be the cheaper alternative.

Thanks for the help.

I suggest an immediate and serious warning should be made to all who update MS3 in order to avoid loss of years and hundreds of hours working on a faulty programme such as MuseScore 3.
