Musescore "syntax"?

• Mar 4, 2019 - 20:19

Hi, i know this is probably not the best time to discuss big new features since the devs are working a lot improving the current ones but i wanted to know if this has been considered at some point.
I gave lilypond a try and found the input method super comfortable once i got my head around the syntax, its just like using a text editor (because it is haha) but to input music. After a few days i realized lilypond is not for me because of many different reasons, but the thing is now i am wondering if it would be possible to include some sort of similar "syntax" for musescore, it seems more comfortable than including key shortcuts for everything since i would have just to remember the command, for example /d pp, as opposed to a multiple key shortcut for every dynamic etc (i remember someone mentioning shortcuts for every element in the palettes at some point). To me this sounds doable if some key, for example "°", opens a small command line where you can input the commands. Maybe this wouldnt be as user friendly but it would be faster for experienced users.
Another small thing, why do hairpins work differently than slurs? To me it would seem easier to start a hairpin with < and have it span all notes until i press < again, just like slurs.

Good suggestion! I am commenting on it because it is getting lost in the other big issue.

On the big issue you have. I think that is not such a good idea, just like it is not a good idea to incorporate a TeX-like mode into MS Word. A notation program using a text-based "programming language" the user has to learn is a different thing to a WYSIWYG program. If we try to incorporate that into MuseScore, it will bloat the program unnecessarily for most. MuseScore and Lilypond are examples of different genres of notation software. If you prefer to use a text interface, use Lilypond. If you prefer to use a GUI interface, use MuseScore. You can always use MuseScore for some things, export as musicxml and then continue in Lilypond, or vice versa.
