I open MuseScore, it tells me an updated version is available, I click the link to update it, the update downloads, then supposedly installs, then .... nothing. The version doesn't update and the next time I open MuseScore it tells me the same thing and all is repeated. I checked my computer but can't find the supposedly downloaded file anywhere either.

If you wish: Download and update it manually from here.

Thanks, I already did that. Just letting you know the auto update function has a bug.
Possible a Mac-only issue? IIRC it did work properly for me on Windows back when 3.0.3 came out and ever since then.
Or maybe some firewall preventing the update from within MuseScore, (but allows via browser)?

Possibly. I'm certainly using a Mac :)
#285931: Mac: Cannot close »Search for updates« dialog – possibly related?

the MuseScore 3 app can't be opened: Because Apple cannot check for Malicious Software!!!!!
That's an entirely different issue, see #300830: MuseScore 3.4.2 on macOS 10.15 (Catalina) "can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software"

Mine just said that too!
Downloaded 3.4.2 Apr 22, 2020, to MacMini using MacOs Catalina 10.15.4
Received the same notice pane as shown by "smeetjspa" on Apr 2
Note, I am a software engineer who programs apps for MacOS. I recognize that Apple recently changed their policies, trying to "be safer" for the consumer (thanks, not). Nonetheless, Musescore will have to either: 1. Comply with this new requirement. -or- 2. Re-configure the app and apply for inclusion in Apple's AppStore (not an easy/fun task, believe me). I hope Musescore can do this, because I'd surely like to use the app !!
That what it does, with the fix for #300830: MuseScore 3.4.2 on macOS 10.15 (Catalina) "can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software". See also https://musescore.org/en/faq#faq-302904
Different issue from what is at hand here though, which is about installing/updating MuseScore, not about running it
I can't open app
so your problem too is different from the issue at hand here
