I'm a young cellist and this is my first piece; can you please give my piece suggestions. Also, for some reason the diminuendo isn't working, how can I fix it?

I think that your problem is in placing the niente as part of the hairpin (click either the hairpin or the niente, and both are highlighted).
By adding the niente on a separate beat, you can achieve the dying-away effect. See attached score.
