...and then make a copy of a score of the kind that you frequently use (e.g. piano score, lead sheet, string quartet, choir, etc.). Select a score element and observe how the Inspector 'recognizes' what each element is and exposes various adjustable parameters for that element. Start changing those parameters for the selected element and watch the behavior in the notation.
Since you're using a score copy, don't worry about "messing it up". Just delete it when done.
