Help a newbie with creating a score

Hello.
I've been trying to create a score for El Noi De La Mare (in D) for guitar. I can't even get through the first measure. Can someone give me the steps (in sequence) to accomplish this? I think that if I understood how to do the first measure, I could probably get through the rest of it.
When I enter dotted eighth notes, then the low D, I lose the dots, etc. The 16th note also messes up.

Thanks very much. That was my problem, and now I see why I was having trouble. I wasn't changing voices as I tried to enter the low voice. I was using a score that was written out by hand, and it was hard to read. I wanted to use Musescore to get a better copy. I can probably do the entire score now.
