How do i enter two notes of different durations on the same staff?
How do i enter two notes of different durations on the same staff? If the answer is to use voices, then how to get the stems to point logically either up or down so they don't hide the notes beneath them?

"X" flips stems indeed, but you don't need or want them here - the stems will automatically point the right way if you voices correctly. Flipping stems would only be needed int he rare cases (this isn't one of them) where you need the stems pointing the opposite way from how multiple voices normally would point.
