How do I get palettes to show up in the left pane?
On my fresh installation of musescore, the pallette area to the left of the screen is empty. Clicking the add pallettes button gives me nothing. How do i dock palettes in that area?

Doesn't work. I click the button and i get a narrow light blue rectangular box right below it, but I can't click on that box or actually do anything with it.

Hover over the right edge of the palettes until the cursor changes to the "drag" icon. Left click, hold and drag horizontally.

You mean the ones in the toolbar? I like those where they are. I want to put some of the stuff from the master pallette over there. The clef pallette, the ornaments palette, and the fingering pallette, just to name a few.
Google search reveals I am not the only person having this problem, but I haven't found a link to a solution. If this is a bug, it's a big one... it basically renders the software unusable. I don't want to have to shift+f9 every time I want to access anything whatsoever.

What OS, and what version of MuseScore? I know some third-party builds, like those provided by Linux distribution maintainers - often don't include the proper versions of all the various libraries MuseScore needs, or otherwise manage to get it wrong. That is why on Linux we always recommend using the version we build and support ourselves - the AppImage you can download from this site (see Download menu above).
On very old (and mostly unsupported by Microsoft) Windows systems, you might also be missing some graphics drivers, not sure what the best solution would be in those cases, except to update your OS.
