Aegean Symphonic Orchestra Timpani Rolls
Okay, so I'm trying to get the roll feature on ASO to work. I've loaded the XML life in Preferences and created a staff text with the channel set to roll, however the roll doesn't happen. It still plays single notes. Am I missing something here?

The sound of a hit is a distinct single sound. The sound of the roll is what sounds like a few hits in succession. For it to sound like an actual roll you need to put either a tremolo or trill on the note and the note must be long enough for a real performer to hit the timpani at least a few times.

So what exactly does the roll channel do?

I forgot to mention. You need to select the Timpani (roll) sound from the ASO sound font. If ASO is the first sound font in your list in the synthesizer, this is automatic when you create the instrument from the ASO list. If not, you need to select Timpani (roll) from the sound list in the mixer.
Additionally. When you open the mixer, click the right arrow at the top of the volume control for the Timpani. It will then show 3 items Timpani, Timpani channel and Timpani Roll channel. This channel is the one that needs set to roll.
In the score you will then be able to switch between the Hit and Roll channels in a similar manner to switching between Arco and Pizz. on a violin explained in https://musescore.org/en/node/50196.
In my palette I have text that says Hit with the hit channel set up and Roll that has the roll channel set up for switching between hits and rolls in my scores. I normally make the text invisible since the notes tell the musician what to do and the text is there only to tell MuseScore what to do.
After typing "Roll" as the staff text, right click on the text "Roll" and select the "roll" sub-bank (Channel), mark it for all voices, and then click the OK button?
Yes, ASO has a Timpani-roll sub-bank.
What Mike320 writes applies to generic sound fonts that do not have a roll bank.

I've done this and nothing has changed. Why may this be?

There may be a new bug.
Or there may be a problem with the synthesizer settings.
I don't know exactly.

Is the Timpani (roll) sound assigned to the roll channel in the mixer?
