Project
I obtained these results with build 7f9c469:
1) Open Edit--Preferences
2) Navigate to the General tab
3) Set theme to Dark
4) Navigate to the Canvas tab
5) Change paper color
6) Check "Use the same color in palettes"
This should change the palettes color to match the paper color, but the palette's color remains dark grey. Relaunching the program didn't help.
Comments
Did you actually change the paper color? Your steps don't mention that. For me it works fine if I do change the paper color.

I should have clarified that, yes, I did change the paper color. I was trying to replicate the setup I currently have in 3.5.

Originally I encountered this problem while running KDE Neon Linux. I just tested it on macOS and it appears to be an issue with that build as well. The only difference between the Linux and macOS apps is that the default dark theme background for Linux palettes appears to be dark grey, while it is white on macOS.
I need a consistent dark mode or inverted color so on my windows machine since I use the windows magnifier to read, I make the magnifier full screen and invert the colors in the magnifier app/ You can set the magnifier quite low if you have no need for it.
