Transcribing questions

• Oct 31, 2020 - 06:53

I'm preparing to transcribe the linked piece into a combo arrangement. I've never transcribed anything into an arrangement for multiple instruments before, so does anybody have any helpful tips, suggestions, or anything for this particular piece? Also, does anybody have any good soundfont suggestions that would make my arrangement sound as close to the original as possible?

This is my first time posting in the forums by the way, so if this ain't the right stuff to ask here, just say so. Thanks!

If you have never used MuseScore, I recommend reading up on the basics in the handbook.
For that particular piece I would recommend trying to find a better recording. ;-)
Any soundfont will probably sound better - it won't have all that background noise. (A soundfont is your least concern at this stage.)

Good Luck.

First, get a nice clean version of the tune. This one is quite clear and also slower:

Then identify the main instruments and pick one and get as much of it down as you can before moving on to the others (for you this might be percussion or it might be the melody on sax or trumpet). You can always change the instrument type later.

Recognise that many sections will repeat but that often one instrument will play the exact same 16 bars again but that others will have minor differences (often in the last bar or two of a section).

My advice. When using MuseScore keep in mind this has be being improved for over 10 year now and is a tool to make notating music easier. If it seems complicated, there's probably a better way. You have to enter all of the notes somehow, but there are tools to automatically move notes between keys and instruments and transpose. These make it easy, so if doing these things isn't easy, there's probably an easier way. If you haven't, read the manual once (see Support->Handbook in the menu at the top of this page). You can skim over features you know you won't use like figured bass but make sure you understand note entry and voices, these are the two most important parts of entering a score. Voices do not refer to singing voices but how you can put multiple rhythms on a single staff so don't ignore this section. Reading the manual will familiarize yourself with the tools you have available to you. If you get stuck on how to do something, the people here are always anxious to lend a helping hand. This forum is about the program but there are some very knowledgeable people here trained in music theory as well.
