You can use a Fermata to make a particular note play for longer, without changing the notation in other respects. That's the "eye" you can see above the mu of the MuseScore logo.
You'll find it at top left of the Articulations section of the standard palette.
Select the note, then double-click on the Fermata symbol in the palette. Then open the Inspector, and change the Time Stretch setting of the Fermata (default 1.0) to whatever value you want.
I have the idea he wants to change a 1/4 note to a half note and have the notes move over rather than overwriting the next notes. You can't do that in version 3 without adding steps and/or changing the duration of a measure. Good news is that I've seen talk about adding such a possibility in version 4.
Cut and paste takes only a few clicks, and it allows you to select exactly how many notes you want to move - just the very next note, all notes through nd of the measure, through the end of the musical phrase, through the end of the whole score, etc.

Use cut and paste to move the notes first.

Isn't there a shorter way to do that?

I don't think you want to change the number of beats in a measure, so that's the only way.
